Thinking - and Rethinking - Athletics in Christian Schools Part One
The word “athletics” can evoke a range of responses from individuals and schools alike. For some, it’s an integral part of their identity — they live and breathe sports. For others, it’s hardly a consideration. Athletics can be divisive, controversial, and at times, imbalanced. Yet, few things can rally loyalty, unity, school spirit, and enthusiasm like an athletic program. While committing to athletics brings rewards and growth opportunities, finding a balance is important. How can schools ensure that athletics support their overall mission rather than overshadow it? These are significant questions that Christian schools wrestle with daily.
In this episode of the Teacher Edition podcast, Jenny Copeland discusses these topics with Brian Trull, the administrator of athletics and facilities at Wilson Christian Academy in Wilson, North Carolina. He has over 25 years of experience in education, and in his roles as JV and varsity girls’ basketball coach, Brian has led his team to win the NCCSA State Championship eight times.
Topics Covered:
