Dr. Jason Haas has been with the North Carolina Christian School Association since 1999. Dr. Haas served as the NCCSA’s Director of Programs and Services for 23 years and assumed the role of Executive Director on July 1, 2022. Dr. Haas has earned a B.S. degree in Education, an M.S. degree in Educational Leadership, an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in Educational Leadership, and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership. He directs the day-to-day operations of the NCCSA and serves as the organizational lead in the products and services offered to Christian schools in North Carolina. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Christian Schools.  He is married and has one daughter, as well as identical twin boys.

About Jason Haas

AI is prevalent, and as educators, you would be hard pressed not to bump into it in your classroom, even with efforts to keep AI out of the classroom.  There are a lot of voices about AI right now, and we as educators need to understand the truth about AI.

Technology Giveth, Technology Taketh Away

We are surrounded by technology.  Like it or not, it impacts every day of our lives.  In schools, the approach to technology is about as varied as it can get.  Some schools use devices by the hour, others allow no devices. Then there are the smart watches students wear, the Bluetooth speakers, and the camera glasses all around us.  AI seems to grow daily with stores without check-out lines, self-driving cars, drones giving roof estimates, and on and on.  Where is this going and is AI ok?  We have a lot to talk about on this week’s Teacher Edition podcast.  
 
With technology,  it is so easy to get way down in the weeds or sidetracked by one particular tool or resource.  Jenny Copeland backs away from those topics and instead focuses on technology in general as it relates to us as Christian educators, to God’s Word, and ultimately to a biblical worldview.  
 
There is an unending variety of views on technology- from schools who ban it to families who embrace it.  The family in the pew in front of them hates it, and not only hates it, but sees it as sinful.  Where is God in all of this? Bryan Smith joins Jenny on the podcast to discuss a biblical worldview regarding technology.

Ruth Davis
Ruth Davis grew up in a Christian home and, at an early age, gave her heart to Christ while attending summer camp.  She has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership.  She began her teaching career as a Teacher of Technology before transitioning to specializing in Instructional Technology Integration. Mrs. Davis and her husband, Jim, live in Northern Virginia and have four grown children, one grandson, and two dogs. Ruth enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, golf, and kayaking.
Dr. Samuel Botta
In the fall of 1975, Sam Botta began his freshman year of college at Old Dominion University. Although Sam initially thought he was attending ODU to play basketball, a senior witnessed to Sam at a party in his dorm cafeteria and then introduced him to a pastor, who led Sam to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Sam soon realized that God had ordained for him to be there not to play basketball, but to place his faith, trust, and life in the everlasting arms of Jesus. After incurring a season-ending injury, Sam left ODU and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education at The King’s College in New York.  Dr. Botta began his professional educational career serving as a physical education teacher and basketball coach, leading his teams to numerous tournaments and championships. He also earned Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees. Dr. Botta went on to serve as principal and head of school at several Christian schools and then as the director of athletics and head coach of men’s basketball at Regent University before joining Cornerstone Christian Academy as head of school. He and his wife Lynda have four adult sons: Danny, Scott, Brett, and Jeff.
Bill Oblas
Although Bill Oblas went to church every Sunday from childhood, he did not accept Jesus as his personal Savior until he was 21. His then-fianceé, Sally, had a burden for Bill to know Christ (she was saved several months earlier), and she led Bill to the Lord. Bill and Sally have been married since 1973.  Bill’s educational career spans over 40 years. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education. While Mr. Oblas retired from education in 2014, he came out of retirement to support the launch of Cornerstone Christian Academy in Virginia. He and his wife, Sally reside in Northern Virginia, and are blessed to know that their three children, children’s spouses, and eight grandchildren all walk with Jesus.

Even the thought of starting a Christian school can be overwhelming - the finances, a place to meet, hiring personnel, recruiting families, curriculum and programs - the list feels unending; however, when God moves individuals to do His work, He already has a plan to provide for every need and to enable His servants in His work.
 
Over the past year, Jenny Copeland was blessed with the opportunity to interact with the leadership and teachers at a brand new Christian school in Virginia. She felt led by the Lord to invite them onto the Teacher Edition podcast to share their story. Although Sam initially thought he was attending ODU to play basketball, a senior witnessed Sam at a party in his dorm cafeteria and then introduced him to a pastor, who led Sam to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Sam soon realized that God had ordained for him to be there not to play basketball, but to place his faith, trust, and life in the everlasting arms of Jesus. After incurring a season-ending injury, Sam left ODU and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education at The King’s College in New York.  Dr. Botta began his professional educational career serving as a physical education teacher and basketball coach, leading his teams to numerous tournaments and championships. He also earned Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees. Dr. Botta went on to serve as principal and head of school at several Christian schools and then as the director of athletics and head coach of men’s basketball at Regent University before joining Cornerstone Christian Academy as head of school. He and his wife Lynda have four adult sons: Danny, Scott, Brett, and Jeff.
 
Bill Oblas
Although Bill Oblas went to church every Sunday from childhood, he did not accept Jesus as his personal Savior until he was 21. His then-fianceé, Sally, had a burden for Bill to know Christ (she was saved several months earlier), and she led Bill to the Lord. Bill and Sally have been married since 1973.  Bill’s educational career spans over 40 years. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education. While Mr. Oblas retired from education in 2014, he came out of retirement to support the launch of Cornerstone Christian Academy in Virginia. He and his wife, Sally reside in Northern Virginia, and are blessed to know that their three children, children’s spouses, and eight grandchildren all walk with Jesus.

Having a “work life balance” is a term we commonly hear. Jenny Copeland, host of The Teacher Edition Podcast and veteran educator, Brian Washburn, discuss the topic of establishing balance in family, ministry and education.  Finding a balance, especially when working in ministry can be so tricky.

About Brian Washburn
 
Brian Washburn grew up in upstate New York and has been in Christian education for over 35 years, serving both as a teacher and an administrator.  He has a bachelors degree in Bible Education, a masters degree in Personnel Services, and a Specialist degree in Education.  His ministry in Christian schools began in Indianapolis, and since then he has served in Charleston, SC, and is currently at Temple Baptist School in Asheville, NC.  Brian and his wife have 2 children and 7 grandchildren.

About Anita Pleasants
Anita Pleasants has been a part of early education for 25 years.  With degrees in Early Childhood Education and Counseling, she held many different positions, such as lead teacher and preschool director.  Most recently, Anita became the director for Child Evangelism Fellowship in Charlotte, NC.  She works part-time at a Christian school in Matthews, NC and then helps churches organize Good News Clubs at public schools in the afternoon.  Anita has a special burden for children here in the states who are growing up learning nothing about the gospel or Biblical principles.  Her goal is to reach the children and their families through Bible clubs and training children's ministry workers in local churches.
